15th December 2014

Yay! British workers are set for a boost in 2015 as real wage growth returns for only the second year since 2009, according to research by management consultancy Hay Group. http://www.hrmagazine.co.uk/hro/news/1148687/uk-return-real-wage-growth-2015

The data, taken a database of about 16 million employees worldwide, predicts average wage growth of 2.5% for UK employees in 2015. While this is no higher than 2014, the lower inflation levels (forecast at 1.7%) will see real wages increase by 0.8% in the next 12 months. – See more at: http://www.hrmagazine.co.uk/hro/news/1148687/uk-return-real-wage-growth-2015#sthash.4EgCw80V.dpuf

This is super encouraging news for everyone, I’m sure you will agree. Hay Group consultant Adam Burden called the figures “an encouraging sign of confidence” in the UK economy.

But for employees to see and enjoy any pay rise, it is we make ourselves promotable and so worthy of the financial remunerations which generally come with a promotion.

It can be tough to rise up the corporate ladder, however if you want that job which excited you and pays well, you are likely to make the climb at some point. Getting promoted may sometimes feel like some sort of elusive mystery, but it’s actually very do-able and entirely within your control,

Here are 5 top tips to make yourself promotable at work:-

  1. Be a team player

In an ideal world, promotions would be based solely on merit. But we don’t live in an ideal world – office politics will often play a role in who gets promoted and who doesn’t.

Use and develop your network skills – be helpful to your co-workers, bosses and reports.

Be popular and build strong relationships with the people you work with.

  1. Be brilliant!

Concentrate on doing the best you possibly can in your current position. Excellent performance reviews aren’t sufficient to get you a promotion – but they are necessary for it!

So is good attendance, punctuality and a willingness to go the ‘extra mile’ when the business needs it. Showing up 5 minutes early and leaving 5 minutes after your shift can turn into a fortune of extra income over your lifetime when you get that promotion.

  1. Keep on learning

If you become the best salesperson of all time you are well on your way…to remaining a highly regarded salesperson for the rest of you career.

It’s not enough to be great at your job – you also have to develop marketable skills that prepare you for more responsibility.

Taking on projects is a great way to broaden skills and network. Many feel uncomfortable volunteering for these because they can be challenging and force you out of your comfort zone. That’s NOT the point!

Once you gain skills beyond what your current job requires, your employer will soon see that keeping you in that job as a waste of your talents.

  1. Be an action-taker

People who are highly promotable don’t sit back and wait to be told to do something. They proactively seek out what needs to be done and the do it well.

It’s one thing to be able to come up with ideas and plans, but it’s quite another to put those plans into action. Actions ALWAYS speak louder than words!

Promotable people know how to execute plans with effectiveness and make changes when necessary.

  1. Four key principles

These four key principles will help you to approach your career and life in general with creativity, enthusiasm, and energy:-

  • Self-reinvention
  • Making a difference
  • Building relationships
  • Creating value

Promotable people are consistently doing these four things because they are passionate about their careers and believe their professions infuse their lives with a sense of meaning and purpose.

Approach your job with these 4 qualities – with a little time and practise, one say soon that corner office could be yours!
